Leading Online Loyalty Program Provider BigCrumbs.com Takes a Big Bite out of Fraud with ThreatMetrix

Posted on April 21st, 2010 by Tom Grubb

Benefits Include Ensuring a Positive Customer Experience, Protecting Their Merchant Partners and Maintaining the Integrity of Their Loyalty Program

LOS ALTOS, CA.  –  April 22, 2010 –ThreatMetrix™, a fast growing provider of fraud detection solutions that do not require personally identifiable information (PII), today announced that BigCrumbs.com, a leading free online loyalty program provider, has selected ThreatMetrix to control online fraud and abuse.

When a customer visits BigCrumbs.com before shopping online, and clicks their links to reach retailers, BigCrumbs.com is paid a commission by the merchants. BigCrumbs.com, in turn, passes this on to the customer in the form of cash back payments. The Atlanta-based company offers it free online loyalty program for popular online retailers including Target, Walmart, Best Buy, Gap, Nordstrom and HP. All totaled, BigCrumbs.com serves over 570 online retail partners and nearly 7,900 member stores, generating millions of dollars in revenue every month.

“With just one click, our program is designed to be easy to use by customers,” said Vince Martin, CEO, BigCrumbs.com. “But it’s that same ease of use that makes us susceptible to fraudsters who attempt to abuse our program with fraudulent credit cards or simulated online transactions. We could implement additional layers of costly and time-consuming protection that would require our members to do more to earn their rewards, but that would detract from an otherwise positive and frictionless experience that our members have come to expect.”

“We were seeing a lot of instances of fraudsters using stolen credit cards or exploiting our merchant partners who did not have any real-time fraud protection in place which resulted in cash losses, lots of manual intervention and frequent conversations with merchants,” continued Martin.

Today, using ThreatMetrix, BigCrumbs.com goes far beyond simple IP geolocation – which can give false positives – and is able to pierce the proxy to determine the true device identity and country of origination. “ThreatMetrix tells us whether we have seen a given device before, whether it has been involved in previous legitimate or fraudulent transactions, and whether we’ve seen multiple accounts opened, or attempted to be opened, using this device,” said Martin.  “And since implementing ThreatMetrix, we can now stop fraud before it occurs.”

Martin likes the additional benefit of being part of a fraud network and knowing whether a device hitting BigCrumbs.com – or any other ThreatMetrix customer’s site utilizing the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network – has a negative history associated with it.

“The key to our business success is providing our members with an easy-to-use program that provides big rewards, while protecting our merchants from fraud,” said Martin. “The ThreatMetrix Fraud Network helps us do that while at the same time ensuring a positive customer experience and maintaining the integrity of our loyalty program.  A better marketing experience for our merchants translates into a better experience and higher rewards for our customers. In that scenario, everybody wins.”

OnlineLabels.com Peels Back Fraudulent Credit Card Orders Using Device Identification from ThreatMetrix

Posted on April 12th, 2010 by Tom Grubb

Keeping the Bad Guys Out while Providing a Positive Online
E-Commerce Experience for their Customers

LOS ALTOS, CA.  –  April 12, 2010 –ThreatMetrix™, a fast growing provider of fraud detection solutions that do not require personally identifiable information (PII), today announced that OnlineLabels.com, one of the largest manufacturers of laser and inkjet printable labels in the world, is using ThreatMetrix to control online fraud.

“Our online ordering system is very automated, therefore we might not see a suspicious order until it has shipped,” said Dave Carmany, president, OnlineLabels.com. “Over one period, we experienced a few dozen fraudulent orders that ultimately led us to find an easier method of detection. The fraudsters weren’t interested in the product, they were simply using our system to test their inventory of stolen credit cards.”

The company also noticed a rise in fraudulent international orders as well, which created an additional concern. “When we fill an international order, it can be quite expensive as costs such as shipping are drastically increased,” added Carmany.

With the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network now in place, OnlineLabels.com has added another measure to their system in order to facilitate the processing of legitimate orders and block fraudulent ones. For example, in the online ordering process a customer may provide them with a “bill to” and “ship to” address in Spain, while ThreatMetrix recognizes that their IP geographic location is actually in France. With this warning signal in hand, OnlineLabels.com opens a dialog with these customers to determine if they are the authorized user of the card. If they are not, the order can be cancelled without being processed or shipped.

The ThreatMetrix Fraud Network enables companies such as OnlineLabels.com to customize a collection of fraud rules to instantly review and analyze transactions. Based on criteria set forth by the company, every transaction is given a fraud score every time an online order is entered into the OnlineLabels.com order processing system. When an order hits a pre-determined score, it will automatically go into a fraud review queue. It is then up to the company to review it and gather additional data by contacting the customer. If upon closer examination it is determined to be fraudulent, the order is manually rejected. The ThreatMetrix Fraud Network can then automatically add transaction and device identifiers to blacklists. If the order is determined to be legitimate, it is released from the fraud review queue for order processing and added to a whitelist for future reference.

“Identifying fraudulent domestic and international orders has become much easier and less time-consuming with ThreatMetrix,” said Carmany. “ThreatMetrix is helping us provide a reliable, expeditious and positive online e-commerce experience to our customers while keeping the bad guys out.”

About OnlineLabels.com

OnlineLabels.com serves customers all over the world for personal and professional labeling needs in a variety of applications. iReel.com Reduces Horror Show of Fraudulent Credit Card Not Present Use with ThreatMetrix Fraud Network

Posted on March 31st, 2010 by drampe

LOS ALTOS, CA.  –  March 31, 2010 – ThreatMetrix™, a fast growing provider of fraud detection solutions that do not require personally identifiable information (PII), today announced that iReel.com, a leading provider of online movie rentals, is using ThreatMetrix to eliminate real-time fraudulent credit card not present use.

According to Adam Altman, COO, iReel.com, many first time customers would go online and order a movie in real-time with a credit card. Unfortunately, many of those credit cards later proved to be invalid after the transaction had occurred.

“The scale of the problem was extraordinary,” said Altman. “We were being hit by hundreds of false credit card transactions on a daily basis. We also had a specific instance of an affiliate who referred – and was commissioned – on “new” customers using stolen credit card data. The affiliate was based in Serbia while the credit card charges were in the U.S. It got to the point where credit card fraud was not only jeopardizing our profitability; it was also threatening our good standing with our merchant credit card payment processor. Something had to be done. That’s when we turned to ThreatMetrix.”

Delivered as a cloud service, the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network is unique among fraud detection solutions because it can address all three of the major web fraud scenarios:  verifying customers, authorizing transactions and authenticating users, all in real-time without customers providing personally identifiable information.

The ThreatMetrix Fraud Network is a web-based system that utilizes a wide variety of device- and transaction-related data, not including PII, to build a contextual score that delivers all the information security pros need to make a thoughtful go, no-go decision about a customer. Among the data gathered by the ThreatMetrix Fraud Network is deep intelligence about the device, key transaction details and past behavior, both on-site and globally.

“Today we use ThreatMetrix prior to credit card authorizations greatly reducing the daily fraud rate to just a handful,” said Altman. “ThreatMetrix gives us peace of mind and insurance against fraudsters so that no one person or entity can easily commit massive fraud against us.

“Our products – online movies – are all digital and the order process is fully automated,” continued Altman. “Since ThreatMetrix is a rules-based system, I can assign various scores or create my own rules to determine whether we should accept or reject a particular transaction. ThreatMetrix is used as part of our automated order process when new customers sign up. It scores people on how likely they are to be fraudulent. I don’t really need to do a lot other than view reports during the week to see how many orders were rejected or flagged.”

ThreatMetrix presents a contextual score to the fraud analyst and security professional via web portal or data warehouse. Built from the ground up to make fraud easier to analyze, report and prevent, the web portal provides users with access to an updated fraud engine rules editor that is context aware including the ability to instantly review and analyze transactions based on date, score, status, or any other attribute across the global network. It can automatically add transaction and device identifiers to blacklists and whitelists with the click of a button, and it can search transactions according to any attribute. Likewise, the data warehouse aggregates information and generates graphical reports so users can spot fraud trends early and tune their risk models accordingly.

CyberSource Partners with ThreatMetrix to Provide Advanced Device Identification Capabilities for Decision Manager

Posted on February 26th, 2010 by Tom Grubb

Complementary Solutions Help Merchants Fight Online Fraud

LOS ALTOS, CA – February 23, 2010 – ThreatMetrix™,the fastest growing provider of device identification solutions for preventing online fraud, today announced that CyberSource Corporation (NASDAQ: CYBS), a leading provider of electronic payment, risk management, and payment security services, has partnered with ThreatMetrix to provide advanced device identification capabilities to customers using the CyberSource Decision Manager fraud management portal.

CyberSource Decision Manager includes over 200 pre-integrated fraud detection tests and services, a business rule editor, case management system, and analytics that help merchants to efficiently and accurately manage fraud. ThreatMetrix provides technology that not only digitally fingerprints, but also profiles the behavior of the device being used by an online buyer. This new, enhanced fingerprint can then be used in conjunction with other order attributes captured by Decision Manager to detect suspicious orders. Anomalies such as a fraudster trying to hide an IP address, or an order being initiated from a device engaged in questionable behavior (spamming, firewall scanning, e.g.) can be detected. In less than two seconds, the CyberSource Decision Manager system profiles an inbound order using the advanced ThreatMetrix fingerprinting technology and other pre-integrated validation tests. The system then automatically sorts the order for fulfillment, rejection or review, in accordance with business rules written by the merchant.

“Staying multiple steps ahead of fraudsters is a business imperative,” said Cory Siddens, product manager for CyberSource Decision Manager. “By partnering with ThreatMetrix, we’ve added another key detector to our fraud management portal – enabling merchants to better profile the true identity and behavior of devices being used to make purchases on their sites. In doing so, the new ThreatMetrix technology allows merchants to identify botnet attacks and detect more first-time fraud.” “We’re pleased that CyberSource has turned to ThreatMetrix in its ongoing effort to provide merchants with the most technologically sophisticated and comprehensive fraud detection solutions,” said Reed Taussig, president and CEO, ThreatMetrix. “Our complementary solutions help merchants minimize the need for manual review and reduce fraud losses.”

When Time is Money, Trust Who Accelerates Order Processing and Online Investigation Time with ThreatMetrix

Posted on February 16th, 2010 by Tom Grubb

Controlling Fraud through Device Identification Seen as Alternative to Burdening Customers with Providing Personally Identifiable Information

LOS ALTOS, CA–February 16, 2010–ThreatMetrix™, the fastest growing provider of device identification solutions for preventing online fraud, today announced that Trust Who LLC (www.trustwho.com), a major payment processor for intangible goods for game publishers, has selected ThreatMetrix to control online fraud and abuse.

According to Marcus Eikenberry, managing director, Trust Who, the sales and transfer of online goods is typically fraught with issues of fraud and culpability. With no physical package to receive, buyers and sellers operate at their own risk. The value of any online intangible good is wholly dependent on the reliability and trust between buyer and seller.

“We work in a market with one of the highest fraud rates in the world – intangible goods of video games,” said Marcus Eikenberry, managing director, Trust Who. “We have to get very aggressive on fraud. If we do nothing, we could see fraud rates of up to 50%.” When orders come in to Trust Who, they show up on a pending page, where they are analyzed, scored, and flagged for suspicious anonamolies such as device identification. With the intelligence data gathered from ThreatMetrix, Trust Who determines the web visitor’s true IP address – even those using a hidden proxy – and utilizes the data for fraud screening analysis.

In a typical customer scenario, Trust Who customer service representatives contact first time customers anywhere around the world within 20 minutes of placing an order to determine that that they are the owners of the payment method being used. But according to Eikenberry, some customers – particularly international – are reluctant to provide personally identifiable information.

“If we could remove calls to customers, that would be our end goal,” said Eikenberry. “Unfortunately, we can’t. One of the largest expenses in any company is payroll. Anything we can do to avoid hiring additional customer service representatives translates into more profits. Time is money. ThreatMetrix helps us save money by reducing our order processing decision-making and investigation time. It saves us at least a minute on every order because it provides us with non-personally identifiable information we wouldn’t have otherwise. When you process 500 to 1,000 orders a day that adds up.”

“Companies like Trust Who are increasingly turning to ThreatMetrix solutions to help them transact e-commerce safely and profitably around the world by keeping the fraudsters out,” said Reed Taussig, president and CEO, ThreatMetrix. “And when time is money, ThreatMetrix can increase their operational efficiencies by accelerating order processing times making for a good online customer experience and encouraging repeat business.”

Scammers Beware: Christian Dating for Free Makes a Date with ThreatMetrix to Help Prevent Online Fraud and Scams

Posted on January 14th, 2010 by Tom Grubb

ThreatMetrix Improves the Safety and Security of Online Communities and Subscription Sites While Enhancing the User Experience

LOS ALTOS, CA–January 14, 2010–ThreatMetrix™, the market and technology leader in device identification for preventing online fraud, today announced that Christian Dating for Free (www.christiandatingforfree.com), the largest 100% free Christian dating site on the Web, with 15 million page views per month, 800,000 visits and a customer database of over 120,000 users, has selected ThreatMetrix to control online fraud and abuse.

Online dating companies – like any other online community or subscription site – are subject to fraudsters and scammers from around the world. In the case of Christian Dating for Free, one scenario involved overseas scam artists from Nigeria who pretended to be located in the U.S. and then attempted to extract money using a money order scam. After establishing the confidence of another community user, the overseas fraudster would send a fake money order and ask the U.S.-based user to deposit it into their bank account and wire money back to them in Nigeria via Western Union. Unfortunately, in most instances the money order turned out to be fraudulent and the user was responsible for paying back the money to their bank.

“Our members’ privacy, safety, and security is a top priority,” said Doron Kim, president and founder of EDating for Free, Inc., parent company of Christian Dating for Free, Catholic Dating for Free, and Black Christian Dating for Free. “With ThreatMetrix, we can see the bad guys right away. Now we see the true data, true city, true IP, and true ISP. In less than five seconds, we can determine if a user who claims that they are in Boston is actually using an IP in Lagos.” ThreatMetrix device identification solutions profile the computers used in online transactions to determine which customers are legitimate and which are fraudsters. ThreatMetrix data is integrated to a Christian Dating for Free home grown dashboard so that their staff can quickly and easily review registrant data to determine whether or not to block or take action upon a user.

According to CEO of EDating For Free, Inc., David Perez “We typically process over 350 new registrations a day. We’ve significantly reduced the number of scammers that gain access to our site’s functionality while reducing the time spent determining who to register or deny to less than 30 seconds. ThreatMetrix is a ‘no-brainer’ for dating sites like ours. It has made our site a safer, better protected community while enhancing the user experience.”

“ThreatMetrix provides online dating services like Christian Dating for Free with real time actionable intelligence to detect and flag suspicious computer users connecting to their site,” said Reed Taussig, president and CEO, ThreatMetrix. “The result is that they can maintain their customers trust and confidence by keeping them safe from dating site predators, grow their businesses, and protect the integrity of their brand.”

About Christian Dating for Free

Christian Dating for Free (www.christiandatingforfree.com) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EDating for Free, Inc., an online Christian dating service provider whose properties include Catholic Dating for Free, and Black Christian Dating for Free. Utilizing the very latest technologies and advanced software applications, their goal is to match Christian singles around the globe.

By reducing the number of fraudulent purchases, Name.com is satisfying a commitment to its upstream registry partners that the number of domain deletions will not exceed 10% of total domain purchases in any given month. This is important since a failure to remain below the 10% threshold would result in a financial penalty to Name.com—potentially tens of thousands of dollars—and damage its reputation with partners.
Prior to deploying ThreatMetrix, Name.com was taking a manual approach to catching fraudsters. The equivalent of 2.5 full-time employees were charged with reviewing each domain purchase and using what little data they had about the customer to determine whether or not to honor the transaction. Having automated and improved the process with ThreatMetrix, individual transaction review is now faster and more effective. Today, the activity is performed using three-quarters of one person’s time—a substantial time and cost savings to Name.com.

ThreatMetrix device identification solutions profile the web transaction, instantly collecting and correlating over 150 discrete pieces of information about the computer and session to develop a risk profile. ThreatMetrix then assigns a unique identifier to the computer – also known as a “device fingerprint” – so clients can quickly establish the status of returning customers. In addition to performing a deep inspection of the TCP/IP packets ThreatMetrix can pierce a proxy to identify the computer’s true IP and geo location and check its reputation against ThreatMetrix Device Intelligence Network which tracks 12 million live compromised computers. “

ThreatMetrix is helping us prevent thousands of bogus domain purchases every month,” said Kellie Peterson, executive vice president at Name.com. “Not only does this improve our standing with partners, it also saves us money because we’re not on the hook for purchases made using stolen credit cards. As important, we’re finding that the number of attempted illegal purchases actually is going down. Thanks in part to ThreatMetrix, cyber criminals are wising-up to the fact that trying to use compromised devices to shop at Name.com is a waste of their time.”

Ebates Protects Partners with ThreatMetrix Device Identification Software

Posted on September 10th, 2009 by Tom Grubb

Scammers Stopped Before They Reach Retailer Websites, Preventing Fraudulent Purchases and Cash Back Rewards

LOS ALTOS, CA – September 10, 2009 – Los Altos, CA – September 10, 2009 – ThreatMetrix, the leading device identification software company for reducing online fraud, today announced that Ebates, the leader in online cash back shopping, has deployed ThreatMetrix to catch would-be scammers and to maintain its positive reputation among merchant partners. ThreatMetrix was selected for its unique ability to identify fraudsters in real time before the first transaction, which they do by revealing key characteristics of computers used in account registration and for online purchasing.

Fraudsters Lose Twice
Ebates’ was attracting fraudsters who saw an opportunity to steal from the company not once but twice. Scammers were trying to use stolen credit cards to illegally purchase items from retailers. At the same time they hoped to profit from the Ebates cash back reward system. Ebates already was using sophisticated fraud detection tools to prevent rebate checks from being mailed to scammers. But ensuring its reputation with retailer partners meant Ebates needed a solution that would detect the scammer at the point of registration rather than when the transaction was being completed. Ebates also needed a system that would keep fraudsters from returning.
“Of course we never want to issue cash back on a fraudulent purchase but even more important is the need to protect our retail partners,” said Kevin H. Johnson, president and CEO at Ebates. “The best way to do this is to prevent fraudsters from registering with Ebates in the first place. ThreatMetrix enables us to provide our retail merchants with an additional layer of protection. We are now catching scammers before they reach retailer websites and reducing incidents of recurring fraud without impacting customers’ online experiences.”

Device Identification Stonewalls Criminals

ThreatMetrix device identification solutions can “pierce the proxy” to determine the actual location of a computer versus what has been reported by the device’s user. Using ThreatMetrix Ebates discovered that offshore fraudsters were signing-up through compromised computers, typically infected PCs of home broadband users in the United States, in order to hide their real location. The ThreatMetrix Global Fraud Network, which tracks more than 10 million compromised devices, also allows Ebates to eliminate fraudsters already in the system. In one example ThreatMetrix was able to prove that a single fraudster was responsible for creating 23 different accounts using fake email addresses and spoofed IP addresses based on a common device fingerprint. “New account sign-up is among the most common forms of online fraud,” said Reed Taussig, CEO at ThreatMetrix. “Device identification can help by redirecting risky accounts away from vulnerable merchants—without compromising legitimate customers. We’re excited to see companies like Ebates benefiting from what analysts say is the latest, greatest technology for online fraud prevention.”

Chellaul Online Dating Sites Stopping Scammers with ThreatMetrix Device Identification Software

Posted on August 25th, 2009 by Tom Grubb

New Fraud Prevention Technology Reveals the True Location of Devices Used in Online Transactions, Enabling Online Businesses to Catch Criminals Before the First Transaction and Stop Bad Guys from Returning

LOS ALTOS, CA – August 25, 2009 –ThreatMetrix, the leading device identification software company for reducing online fraud, today announced that Chellaul Corporation, a leader in niche dating sites, has deployed ThreatMetrix to catch fraudsters before they gain access to dating site services and also to keep previous offenders from returning to the websites. Chellaul Corporation selected ThreatMetrix after a comprehensive review of device identification vendors. Chellaul chose ThreatMetrix for its ability to “pierce the proxy,” part of its comprehensive device identification capability that allows ThreatMetrix to determine the actual location of a computer versus what has been reported by the device’s user.

The Hidden Proxy System

Concealing true device location via hidden proxy systems is a common technique of cyber criminals. By using a hidden proxy scammers can pretend to be in one location, frequently a US city, when the device they are actually using to execute a fraudulent transaction is located in another country all together. Online businesses without device identification solutions are hard-pressed to keep scammers off their websites. Sophisticated criminals who are booted off a website simply return later using the same device but with new log-in credentials. ThreatMetrix device identification reveals in real-time the true location of a computer, quickly catching first-time fraudsters as well as those attempting to return to a site with new credentials.

“We knew member fraud was a problem but we couldn’t stop it,” said Samuel Bates, co-founder and CTO at Chellaul. “Scammers were coming back faster than we could kick them out because we had no way of tracking them. Device identification changes all that. We can now keep track of compromised devices so anyone attempting to log-in with one is immediately flagged. In effect we’ve moved from random guesswork to systematic identification of scammers and so far we’ve banned over 1,500 fraudulent members. The result is a more positive customer experience which we believe will trigger greater membership renewals and increased activity and satisfaction on the site.”

Safer Online Dating

Dating site members are encouraged to sign up, log in and interact with one another, but cyber criminals see this as an opportunity to exploit unsuspecting users. By masquerading as single females for instance, crooks solicit money, airplane tickets and other valuables from male members through flirtatious online communications. Industry research suggests that at least 10% of new accounts created every day for online dating sites are from scammers.

With device identification, Chellaul is able to proactively detect many scammers before they are able to engage legitimate members, and returning fraudsters are flagged instantly, even when the fraudster signs up again with new account information. Chellaul can also detect multiple scammers simultaneously when it’s found that several are logging in with different credentials but from the same device.
Despite launching in the US only eight months ago, ThreatMetrix has quickly become a leader in device identification with customers in online dating, social networks, etailers, and online payment facilitators. ThreatMetrix was recently named in Forrester’s Hot Banking Tech Companies To Watch In 2009 report.

“Victims of online fraud tend to feel very helpless,” said Reed Taussig, CEO at ThreatMetrix. “They want to fight back but unlike face-to-face crime cyber criminals are mostly anonymous. Device identification is the first fraud prevention capability to truly put an ID on the evildoer. We’re never going to catch all the world’s cyber criminals, but expansive use of device identification technology can help significantly reduce the number of machines being used to perpetrate these crimes. Once a device has been tagged by ThreatMetrix, its potential to do harm is severely limited.”
